Halogen vs LED bulbs (Switch to LEDs & Save $253 a Year)

Halogen vs LED bulbs

Look here’s the thing:

Initial impressions can be deceiving — and nowhere this truer than in the case of halogen bulbs.

Halogen bulbs have a lower price tag than LEDs, but they are no friend of yours. They waste a lot of electricity and hence cost significantly more to run than LEDs.

How much more?

The average Australian home will save $253 a year by replacing halogen bulbs by LEDs.

A typical Australian home uses approximately 37 light bulbs. If your home has more bulbs, the savings will be even greater.

But that’s not all…

LED light bulbs are way better than halogen bulbs on many counts. Continue reading to find out why switching over to LEDs is the smart thing to do.

Energy efficiency

LED bulbs use 85% less energy than halogen bulbs.

You may be wondering, “That’s all good, but what does that mean in dollars.”

Research shows a traditional 75 Watt light bulb costs $23 a year to run. Compared to it, an LED producing the same amount of light costs only $6. That’s a saving of $17 a year on just one bulb!

Considering that an average home has approximately 37 light bulbs, savings can quickly add up.

Significantly higher cost of running is the number one reason why halogen bulbs are fast falling out of favor with consumers.

Longevity

When you do the math, an LED bulb actually comes out cheaper.

Yeah, I know, you may be thinking that I am contradicting myself, but that’s not the case.

While the upfront cost of an LED bulb is 3 times that of a halogen bulb, but because of its longer life, it actually costs less over time. Let me explain.

Research shows an LED bulb last about ten times longer than halogen bulbs.

On average a halogen bulb costs about $3, whereas an LED bulb will set you back by $10 - $15. However, since you will be needing 10 halogen bulbs to last as long as one LED, your upfront investment will eventually turn out to be higher in case of halogen bulbs.

Cost

LED bulbs are, in general, more expensive than halogen light bulbs. However, even this is dramatically decreasing the more technology and research is done into LED bulbs. As the technology becomes more advanced and commonplace, the average price of an LED bulb will become lower and lower..

Brightness (Lumens)

LED bulbs are just as bright as halogen bulbs, plus they use less energy to achieve that brightness.

This means that a 7.5 watt LED bulb will give you the same brightness as a 50-watt halogen bulb. This is exactly why LED bulbs are more energy efficient.

Heat

Yes, LED bulbs are much cooler than halogen bulbs. This is because the majority of the energy used in LED bulbs is turned into light rather than heat.

Halogen bulbs become extremely hot, which you might have already experienced. They produce much more heat, which is why they use so much more energy.

Fittings

Don't worry, the majority of halogen bulbs can be replaced by an LED bulb. The fitting for the bulbs does not matter.

For instance, LED light bulbs with E27 Edison Screw base or with B22 Bayonet Cap base can be easily fitted into many existing fixtures without any problem.
