A dimmer switch is one of the smallest decisions in a lighting project and one of the most consequential. Get it right, and every room has range: candlelit dinner warmth, bright task light for reading, and everything in between. Get it wrong, and you’re dealing with flicker, buzz, drop-out at low levels, or a bulb that dims to 40% and refuses to go further. The difference, almost always, comes down to whether the dimmer is matched to the LED load it is controlling.

Why your old dimmer probably won’t work with LED bulbs

Most dimmer switches installed in Australian homes before 2015 were designed for incandescent or halogen bulbs. Those technologies are resistive loads: they draw a predictable amount of current across the full AC cycle, and older dimmers were engineered around that behaviour.

LED bulbs work differently. They draw very little current, often less than a tenth of what an equivalent incandescent would draw, and they use an internal driver to convert mains power. That combination creates two problems with older dimmers.
