How to Light a Home Theatre Room

How to Light a Home Theatre Room

Although a night at the movies sounds like a nice time, you can also enjoy a good movie in the privacy of your own home. These days, home entertainment systems have become bigger and better, not to mention a whole lot affordable. With surround sound and 3D television screens, you can turn your own living room into a theatre. Even if you just have a simple home entertainment system, the lights on your home theatre can make a big difference to the entire experience. Here are a few tips on how to set up your home theatre’s lighting.

Install Dimmers You’ll want to have dimmers installed, especially if your theatre room is also your living room. Dimmers are little knobs that can be integrated into the light switch, allowing you to fine-tune the amount of light produced by bulbs connected to the switch. You can make the room as dim as you want, and you won’t have to get new bulbs. They’re fairly cheap, but you’re going to need an electrician to hook it up for you. Dimmers work with select kinds of bulbs, but fortunately, this includes LED bulbs.

Close the WindowAlthough open windows are encouraged throughout the rest of the home to facilitate natural airflow and let sunlight in, once it’s movie time, you’ll want to shut the windows and close the curtains. You’re after a theatre look, so you’ll want the room to be as dark as possible. Some curtains are even made to block out all the sunlight, or you can place blinds over the windows and then cover them with curtains to achieve that pitch-dark effect.

Apps for your lights Believe it or not some of the new light systems, like LED light bulbs, actually have corresponding apps that you can use to control them. These “smart-lights” are commonly bought as a whole system, so they’re a perfect choice if you’re building or renovating your theatre room. If not, just stick with the dimmers.
